Responding to the economic and practical aspects of Saraya, the design of ‘Zone M’ is inspired by the original spirit and values of the ‘Old City’. By taking into account the old city urban morphology, the historical understanding of Aqaba, and the sensitivity and distinct case of this project, a comprehensive strategy to deal with the complexity of structural design is adopted without reducing the quality of architectural design
A uniform structural and spatial grid is deployed across the site area. Two main intersecting routes at a central square resembling the old city plaza form the basic configuration linking the two main gates from the East and the North. An additional gate links ‘Zone L’ and the northeastern edge to the southern promenade area. Thus creating four surrounding quarters, which contribute to ‘way finding’ and ease of navigation through the project without losing direction.
